Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) is the highest mountain in the Alps with its 4,808 metres. The border between Italy and France passes through the summit of Mont Blanc, making it both French and Italian. The painting is based on a view of Mont Blanc that Sofia Rennerståhl saw when she was in  Courmayeur, Valle d'Aosta.
